May 9, 2008 Question
With no outs and nobody on base the batter hits a towering fly ball towards the left field fence. The left fielder in desperation throws his glove at the fly ball in an attempt to knock it down. His glove makes contact with the ball and the force of the glove knocks the ball over the left field fence. In your opinion the ball would not have cleared the fence if the glove had not come in contact with the ball. You also believe the ball was catchable by the left fielder if he had not thrown his glove at the ball. You...
(a) award the batter a homerun since the ball cleared the fence
(b) award the batter a "ground rule" double since the ball came in contact with the glove and as a result the ball ended up over the fence creating a "dead ball" situation
(c) eject the left fielder for throwing his glove at the ball and award the batter 1st base due to fielder interference
(d) award the batter 3rd base since it really was not a homerun and it really was not a "ground rule" double either. 3rd base is in the middle.
Only if the left fielder was as accurate when throwing the ball instead of his glove he'd be an all-star. The correct call of course is?
